Impotence - Causes and Treatments
Impotence is a disease in which one or more of the organs fail to function normally. Impotence is not just a physical handicap. It is a disorder that interferes with one's ability to have an active sexual life. Impotence is one of the leading causes of marital discord and it often leads to depression, social isolation and other mental health issues. While impotence is a common problem, most men do not go to their doctors seeking help for it.
Impotence, like most medical conditions, is caused by a variety of factors. Some of these are inherent, meaning that there is no way to prevent them; some are related to age, such as the build-up of age-related disease such as cholesterol or high blood pressure; others are situational, meaning they are caused by an external circumstance (i.e. hypertension or high blood sugar). Impotence is considered a common cause of erectile dysfunction (ED), which affects approximately 4% of men at some point in their lives. Impotence can range in severity from mild irritation (i.e. needing to be rubbed down or worn out at night) to extreme impairment (the inability to achieve or sustain an erection sufficient enough for sex or the inability to attain ejaculation).
Impotence is usually treated based on what kind of symptoms are present and which ones are more common. Impotence is commonly treated by cardiovascular medications, and in particular, blood vessel and heart medications. These are used when a man's circulatory system has been compromised due to disease or injury. For example, if a patient has had a heart attack or is on heart medications, they may be at greater risk of losing their erection or suffering from premature ejaculation. In such cases, erection replacement drugs or devices are administered to regain sexual function. Erectile Dysfunction drugs are also used to treat other conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, in which the underlying problem is decreased blood flow to the penis.
Another form of treatment that can help those with impotence are cardiovascular disease medications. If high blood pressure or coronary artery disease is the cause of impotence, medications can help improve the heart's function or eliminate it altogether. Other cardiovascular diseases include diabetes, cardiomyopathy (arteriosclerosis of the heart muscle itself), congenital heart defects, peripheral arterial disease, cardiac stress, and high blood pressure brought on by autonomic neuropathy. While medications can help those with cardiovascular disease treated, they often have undesirable side effects and are often not effective in correcting a serious physical ailment. Also, they are often prescribed for a prolonged period of time, placing mentally and physically unhealthy men in a state of constant stress.
Impotence is thought to be the result of psychological issues. Impotence may occur as a result of stress caused by financial troubles, job losses, the death of loved ones, or relationship difficulties. Men may also be suffering from impotence due to emotional issues such as depression, guilt, anger, anxiety, and social anxiety. There are numerous psychological causes of impotence. Many men may not even be aware of the issues that are causing their condition.
Psychological issues that can lead to impotence are usually more difficult to treat, and often leave behind permanent scarring, which is emotionally more difficult for the patient to deal with. Men who experience impotence due to psychological problems are more likely to seek help for their condition than men who do not experience impotence because they are already experiencing high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart defects, peripheral arterial disease, and heart stress. For these patients, psychotherapy can provide relief and possibly help to avoid unnecessary medication. If you are suffering from impotence, seek help as soon as possible, especially if your condition is caused by psychological issues.
